Seed Starter Workshop

Join the Delaware Master Gardeners and Food Bank of Delaware agriculture team and learn how you can start your very own summer vegetables! Learn how to start and care for seedlings and create a greenhouse-like environment in your home using easy-to-source, inexpensive items. We will use the greenhouse at the Food Bank Farm to sow seeds that you will be able to take home or continue to grow in the greenhouse for later pickup. Plant material will be provided, but we encourage you to bring any favorite seeds. Class size is limited to 15.

Cost: $15, $20 or $25 (based on what you can pay/offer)

Information Session -New Ground Growers Series

A FREE flexible and accessible training for urban/community growers of all styles and scales to increase local food production. This program is designed for participants to craft their own journey to build their experience and education with three different ways to participate. Through a combination of events and assignments participants will learn about topics from the primary aspects of urban growing: planning, planting, tending, processing, marketing, and managing. Due to changes to the program, based on participant feedback, we strongly encourage those interested in participate to join us for the information session. Come learn what to expect from the course, what topics we’ll be covering and get all of your questions answered!

Risk Management and Marketing for Vegetable and Specialty Crop Farmers

Participants in this virtual workshop series will:

1. Be introduced to the farm business planning process and learn how to: •Identify and list all of their farm’s assets and their productive capacity •Determine the current wellbeing of the farm business •Review the feasibility of alternative enterprises •Evaluate the risks the farm faces •Determine who the customers of the farm are and what utility (form, place, time, possession) these customers want •Make basic marketing decisions: •What form, grade, quality to produce •When, where, how to price •When, where, how to deliver

2. Be introduced to five areas of risk (Production, Marketing, Financial, Human Resource, Legal) and learn how to identify, measure, and manage risks on their farms in these areas.

3. Understand financial management of the farm and how to use financial statements (Income Statement, Balance Sheet) and enterprise budgets to assess the performance of the farm business and make better decisions.

4. Understand marketing principles and how the elements of the marketing mix (Product, Price, Promotion, Place, People) are used to create an effective plan to manage the marketing decisions on the farm.

5. Develop a personal risk management and marketing plan for your farm. •Develop goals in each of the five risk areas, and in each of the five marketing areas. •Identify specific actions you will take for each goal. •Commit to follow through and implement the actions identified.

This workshop series will be delivered through five required Zoom sessions, accompanied by five optional review & homework help-sessions.

Even with the abundance of our local markets and farm stands, nothing beats the satisfaction of growing your own vegetables. This two-evening workshop will cover how to plan, plant, maintain, and harvest your own home garden, no matter the size. We'll cover soil, amendments, tools, and take a close look at over 25 individual vegetables. We will have fun, and you will leave confident and ready to garden.

Rooting DC 2024

We are delighted to announce the 17th Annual Rooting DC! Rooting DC is a FREE, day-long urban gardening forum which:

1) provides education about urban agriculture and food systems,

2) cultivates health and protection of the environment, and

3) builds community.

Rooting DC has been the District’s central meeting ground for individuals and nonprofits looking to grow a healthier food system in the nation’s capital. This annual, day-long event started in 2007 as a small gathering of 150 urban gardeners and has grown into an annual event with hundreds of attendees and local experts from across the region. the event has been held in-person and virtually, and includes educational workshops, networking space, and valuable community building where local food-systems stakeholders share their knowledge and learn from one another.

2024 Urban Ag Session

The Delaware Urban Farm and Food Coalition (DEUFFC) invites you to join us for a Delaware Agriculture Week event. This event will feature the past, present, and future of the DEUFFC highlighting collaborative urban agriculture projects and members, past and present, in celebration of our 10th annual urban agriculture session during Delaware Agriculture Week.

Arrive as early as 5:00 pm to network with community members, and to learn more about the work of the DEUFFC and how to get involved. Partnering organizations will host displays and refreshments will be provided by Vegan in Motion. Formal program begins at 6:00pm.

HFHK Garden Coordinator Appreciation Dinner

Healthy Foods for Healthy Kids is organizing its first-ever Garden Coordinator Workshop & Appreciation Dinner. The workshop, hosted at FMC Corporation in Newark, will feature guest speakers discussing topics such as soil health and pest prevention. The workshop is open to all Garden Coordinators at HFHK's partner school. Space is limited.

This will be an Open House / Holistic Wellness Loop between the three centers with each center supporting with a schedule of activities . Guests will have the opportunity to travel between the three centers and experience various activities over the three days.
